Franz Schubert
Schwanengesang D 957 (selection)

This year, alongside young baritone Benjamin Appl, the legendary Lied pianist Graham Johnson will present a programme that combines songs by Beethoven and Schubert in such a fitting manner as only a true connoisseur of the likes of Johnson can achieve. Schubert’s posthumous cycle Schwanengesang D. 957 has a particularly close connection with Beethoven: it contains a series of poems by Ludwig Rellstab that were sent by the late Beethoven’s secretary Anton Schindler directly from the composer’s desk to Schubert. Thus, as Graham Johnson puts it, we have the emergence of “a sort of posthumous gift from Beethoven to a younger composer who had never really gotten to know him. Rellstab had hoped that his poems would be set to music by Beethoven; instead, they came to serve as a basis for some of Schubert’s very last compositions in the fall of 1828.”
