Ludwig van Beethoven
33 Variations on a Waltz by Diabelli op. 120

For decades, Dame Mitsuko Uchida has been widely admired as a sensitive, subtle artist with a spirited, intelligent approach to music. She no longer wants to play more than 50 concerts a year; each of her appearances can thus be regarded as a lucky occasion. Born in Tokyo, Mitusko Uchida lived and studied in Vienna before she settled in London after winning a number of prizes in international competitions. On the subject of Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations, she recalls: “When I was young, many pianists in Vienna were performing them. I used to think: ‘Goodness gracious, the piece just doesn’t want to end!’ But that is not actually the case. Once you have grasped the way the cycle is put together and how individual variations are connected with one another, the piece passes by in a flash.” Over ten years ago, Uchida decided to allow herself the time to “live with this unique work”, to let it rest and grow. Ever since then she has often performed the Diabelli Variations, still on the lookout for further inner connections and ramifications, and trying to capture the cycle’s quirky kind of humor. “Each day is a day of new discoveries for me. I don’t know whether I’m young or old, but one thing I know for sure: as long as I live, I want to go on exploring music ever more profoundly. And that is my life’s only goal.”
