Lichtburg Essen
The Lichtburg is the jewel in the crown of German cinema culture and tradition. For 90 years it has impressed with its grandiose architecture, incomparable atmosphere and special film selection. Opened in 1928, the Lichtburg looks back on an eventful history. In 2002, the entire building was completely renovated and has shone in new splendour since March 2003. Today, the cinema has 1,250 seats, a screen of around 150 square metres, the latest image and sound technology and a large theatre stage.

The Lichtburg has been awarded the “Signet Barrierefrei” (barrier-free signet) by the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Selbsthilfe Behinderter in Essen e.V. The Lichtburg is equipped with the appropriate facilities for the special needs of people with walking disabilities: there are four seats for wheelchair users on the balcony of the large auditorium, and the auditorium itself can be reached by lift.
