Elena Bashkirova recieves the Ruhr Piano Festival Prize 2018

Each year, the Ruhr Piano Festival Prize honors an artist whose life achievement is closely connected with the Festival. This honorary award is symbolized by Düsseldorf artist Friedrich Werthmann’s steel sculpture Diapason. Compensation consists in a scholarship granted by the prize-winner to a young pianist of his/her choice, who is invited to play a début recital at the Festival the following year.

This year, the Ruhr Piano Festival has chosen to honor Elena Bashkirova. The internationally celebrated artist will be performing at the Festival for the 21st time in 2018. She has offered us a great number of marvelous chamber music recitals – often with her son, the violinist Michael Barenboim – and she has participated in vocal recitals with singers such as Robert Holl, concertos with orchestras, and a number of memorable solo recitals. Audiences are thrilled again and again by Bashkirova’s finely sensitive interpretations, her intelligent, bold choices of repertoire, and her charismatic appeal. For many years, Elena Bashkirova has felt a great responsibility for future generations, and she has wholeheartedly engaged herself in favor of the promotion of young artists. She regularly invites them to participate in joint projects such as the International Jerusalem Chamber Music Festival, which she founded twenty years ago, and where she also proves her ingenious talent for selecting repertoire and conceiving recital programmes.
