Roger Morelló Ros

Roger Morelló Ros (b. Catalonia 1993) is a committed, expressive and highly imaginative cellist, with a great ability to connect with others that makes him a channel of communication that unites creator, creation and audience. He creates experiences that convey his passion, authenticity and spontaneity, appealing to both audiences and organizers from all over the world, in concert halls such as the Philarmonie Berlin, Palau de la Música Catalana, Pau Casals Auditorium or Casa Milà (Gaudí’s building in Barcelona), where he was an Artist in Residence during the 2018/19 season.

He has recently released an album in homage to one of his most beloved references, Pau Casals. “The Voice of Casals” (Ibs Classical – SWR) is a tribute to the most important humanist of the 20th century in Catalonia, and Morelló has captured his most expressive and innovative musical side, constantly searching for the most sincere sound for the cello. A careful and precise work, at the same time full of life and emotion, that fragile balance that Morelló embroiders in the disc and in all his interpretations, as highlighted by critics.

As a soloist, he has performed with numerous orchestras like the Philarmonischer Verein Frankfurt am Main, Babylon Orchestra Berlin, Studio-Orchester Duisburg, Collegium Musicum Aschaffenburg, Händel Orchestra, Sabadell Chamber Orchestra, Musikalische Akademie Burscheid, Sinfonie Orchester Tempelhof, Corelli Orchestra, Zehlendorfer Kammerorchester, and the Youth Orchestra of Cerdanyola, among others.

Furthermore, he has been invited to festivals such as Verbier Festival, Klavier-Festival Ruhr, Düsseldorf Festival, Orpheo Music Festival, Rheinhessen Musikfestival, Euregio Musikfestival, Festival Peregrinos Musicales, Musethica International Chamber Music Festival Berlin, Hainfeld International Festival, Aurora Winter Classic Festival, Echo Festival, MozArte Festival, Bochum Fokus Festival, Impressions Classic Festival, and has played with members of the Michelangelo String Quartet and Artemis Quartet.

Roger Morelló has obtained numerous prizes in national and international competitions such as the Gustav Mahler Prize, Brigitte-Kempen Wettbewerb, Manhattan International Music Competition, Chamber Music Competition of the Cologne Music University, The North International Music Competition, and International Music Competition Berlin, among many others. He has also been a fellow of the New York Woman Composers Association, the Deutscher-Musikrat, and the Dörken Stiftung, among others.

Roger covers a wide range of repertoire: from baroque to contemporary music. His commitment to contemporary music is exemplified by his collaborations with many composers, who have written and dedicated several works to him, as well as the substantial number of premieres he has performed by composers such as Elisenda Fábregas, Marc Migó, Joan Magrané, Johannes Schöllhorn, Francisco Goldschmidt, Rain Worthington, Debra Kaye and Victoria Bond, among others.

Roger Morelló initially studied in Spain with Carolina Pineda (Xilòfon Reus & EMMS Salou), David Blay (Conservatorium Vila-seca), Damian Martínez (Musikene – High Music School of the Basque Country) and then moved to Germany to do a Master and a Soloist-Diploma with Maria Kliegel at the University of Music in Cologne, finishing with honors and with the financial support of the Humboldt Foundation, Deutschslandstipendium and the Güell Scholarship. He has also received masterclasses from Steven Isserlis, Frans Helmerson and Cuarteto Casals, among many others.

With his desire to appeal to a wider audience, the album “Schumann goes Tango” (Austrian Gramiphone, 2022) was released with pianist Alica Koyama Müller, and will soon publish a CD as a soloist with the Babylon Orchestra Berlin and a chamber integral (Hänssler Classic) by John D. Gottsch with violinist Katerina Chatzinikolau and pianist Tobias Haunhorst.

He was the Artistic Director of the Festival Bach to Basics (2021) in Málaga, which consisted of 6 cellists, 6 Bach Suites, and 6 commissioned works. He recently debuted as a soloist in the United States and soon in Taiwan and the Czech Republic. Furthermore, his performances are often broadcasted by the National Radio of Spain, Catalan Radio, German radios (SWR, WDR), and by the BBC.

The artist has an intense social activity (Babylon Orchestra, Une Clé de Sol pour une Étoile, Yehudi Menuhin Foundation), and is committed to the values of sustainability.
