Luciano Berio was fascinated throughout his life by folk and popular music in their most diverse forms. Now, inspired by the legendary Italian composer’s curiosity and open-mindedness, the Ensemble Musikfabrik and Sarah Maria Sun devote an evening to the multiple connections between a wide variety of music styles in the 20th century. Thus, in Stravinsky’s suite from L’Histoire du soldat (1920), we hear several marches, a chorale, a stylized tango, and a ragtime tune. Written several years later, Leoš Janáček’s Concertino for piano and chamber orchestra shows the Czech composer’s strong roots in the language and folk music of his native land. The evening closes with Berio’s Folk Songs, interpreted by Sarah Maria Sun’s with her acclaimed genre-bending vocal talent, along with the eminent Ensemble Musikfabrik, specialized in contemporary music. Written in 1964, the Folk Songs combine a series of folk tunes from Italy, France, North America, and Armenia with instrumental accompaniments that reflect Berio’s own wide-ranging style and musical outlook.
