Rafał Blechacz was the fourth Polish pianist to win First Prize at the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw: he achieved that feat in 2005, exactly 30 years after his compatriot, the legendary Krystian Zimerman. That moment launched Blechacz’s global artistic career, in which chamber music would always play a prominent role. The exceptional talent of young Korean violinist Bomsori Kim came to Blechacz’s notice when he was following the International Henryk-Wieniawski Violin Competition on television. He immediately wrote her an e-mail. As soon as they started rehearsing together, the two artists noticed that they made an excellent musical match. They also agreed quickly on repertoire. Their programme for this evening includes one of Rafał Blechacz’s favorite composers: fellow-Pole Karol Szymanowski. Blechacz is particularly fond of Szymanowski’s Sonata in D Minor, which contains “so many emotions and a number of musical characters”. Gabriel Fauré’s first violin sonata was at the top of Bomsori Kim’s wish list. Thus the two artists have jointly conceived an evening brimming with French élégance and Polish melancholy. Blechacz’s multicolored, focused playing blends gorgeously with Bomsori Kim’s refined, poetic violin tone. They round off their programme with a homage to the 250th anniversary of the birth of the Titan.
