Elisabeth Leonskaja has become a legend in her own time, a “Grande Dame” of piano playing, and one of the very few who deserve that title. The legacy of great Russian pianists such as Sviatoslav Richter and Emil Gilels is carried over by Leonskaja into the 21st century. “Her path goes from strength to strength. Leonskaja never ceases to surpass her own benchmarks thanks to her passion, her intelligence, and the high demands she places on herself, thereby attaining the rank of the greatest in her field.” writes French magazine Diapason. Leonskaja has chosen to live in Vienna, and Beethoven’s music has been one of her major staples for many decades. “The more you play, the better you feel,” she once stated in an interview. But her performances never fall into routine. As she admits, her approach to Beethoven has “certainly changed with time”, at least in certain details. “I have remained true to myself, but with corrections.” This evening she will present Beethoven’s three last sonatas Opp. 109 to 111, a trilogy that forms the zenith of the Titan’s output for piano.
