No Limits is the title of a DVD portrait of Marc-André Hamelin, filmed in the context of his solo recital at the Ruhr Piano Festival in 2007. The description of his playing certainly still applies today. Not only because Hamelin is capable of quasi-delirious acrobatics for which others would require growing an 11th or 12th finger. The Canadian virtuoso also sports an almost boundless pleasure in discovering rarities, “thanks to my naturally innate curiosity”. Hamelin’s vast discography, which has received countless awards, is more than just an inexhaustible treasure trove. In the sonatas of Haydn, Schubert, and Liszt, we likewise encounter a musician of profound expression. “The only reason for me to go onstage is to share the miracle of human creativity with others”, he once said in an interview. We shall once more gladly allow this exceptional pianist to place us under his spell!
