Ferruccio Busoni’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra with Male Choir is one of the most monumental and at the same time fascinating works of this genre, not only because of its extensive instrumentation and duration of almost 80 minutes. The five-movement work with its clear echoes of Liszt or Tchaikovsky, for example, seems like a huge, resounding swan song to late Romantic piano music. Marc-André Hamelin, one of the great virtuosos of our time and at the same time an intimate connoisseur of Busoni’s piano works, already recorded his only piano concerto in 1999. In the 100th year of Busoni’s death, he now performs it in a unique interplay with the Wuppertal Symphony Orchestra and the Dortmunder Chorakademie under the direction of Patrick Hahn.
