Ludwig van Beethoven
Concerto for piano and orchestra No. 4 in G Major op. 58
Concerto for piano and orchestra No. 5 in E Flat Major op. 73

For Jan Lisiecki, one of the shooting stars among young pianists, Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto often served as a career booster. In Bologna in 2012, Lisiecki replaced Martha Argerich on short notice with Orchestra Mozart under the baton of Claudio Abbado. Four years later he played the same work on the occasion of his Carnegie Hall début. At Suntory Hall in Tokyo, he conducted an orchestra from the piano bench for the first time in a performance of the same work. “Concentration and suspense are particularly intense in this concerto”, Lisiecki remarks. In the meantime, he has performed the entire cycle in public several times. But is it truly a cycle? “Beethoven certainly didn’t conceive these five concertos as a cycle. Still, for us, they belong together because they provide us with a variegated, differentiated image of the composer”, Lisiecki remarks. Now he will dare an extraordinary tour-de-force by performing all five concertos in the course of two Ruhr Piano Festival evenings in Dortmund and Essen while conducting the Chamber Orchestra of Europe from the piano bench.
