The First World War marked a turning point in Ferruccio Busoni’s work. While he had been at the peak of his creativity before, he returned home as a broken man.

He could not complete his magnum opus, the “Faust” opera. Magnificent, condensed, and at times polytonal pieces were created in the years before the war, including sonatinas or the “Berceuse Élégiaque.” With these compositions, Busoni ventured furthest into modernity. For example, in his 1913 “Sonatina Seconda,” he completely dispensed with key signatures and largely with bar lines. Kirill Gerstein presents these works in one of his popular “Lecture Recitals.”
