The Japanese pianist Mao Fujita has managed to amaze even masters such as his teacher Kirill Gerstein and Christoph Eschenbach. “He doesn’t just play Mozart,” said conductor and pianist Eschenbach, “he makes him shine!”

Laughter as bright as a bell, shimmering presence and mysterious depth: Mao Fujita’s character forms a perfect symbiosis with the music he plays. For Fujita, Mozart’s sonatas seem to be a familiar, almost intimate space. Fujita’s playing also possesses a freshness that resembles spontaneous improvisation – and this applies not only to Mozart, but to every repertoire he interprets.

With an innate musical sensitivity and naturalness to his artistry, 24-year old pianist Mao Fujita has already impressed many leading musicians as one of those special talents which come along only rarely, equally at home in Mozart as the major romantic repertoire, with the New York Times writing, “As soon as his fingers touched the keys, waves of airy filigree, beautifully shaped and accomplished, emerged in almost continuous streams” on the occasion of his US debut at Carnegie Hall in January 2023.
