Arcadi Volodos auf dem Klavierfestival Ruhr 2020

Ludwig van Beethoven
Nine variations on the Aria “Quant’ è più bello” from the opera “La Molinara” by Giovanni Paisiello WoO 69
Six Variations on an Original Theme op. 34
Five Variations on “Rule Britannia” WoO 79
Seven Variations on “God save the King” WoO 78
Twelve Variations on the Russian Dance from the Ballet “Das Waldmädchen” by Paul Wranitzky WoO 71
Sonata No. 21 in C Major op. 53 “Waldstein”

Apart from his 32 piano sonatas and five piano concertos, Beethoven wrote a great number of themes with variations. And with the 33 Variations on a Waltz by Anton Diabelli he left a unique magnum opus to posterity. Finnish pianist Olli Mustonen sees it likewise: he is one of the few world-class pianists who regularly features variations by the Titan in his programmes. “Beethoven’s variations have no equivalent anywhere else in piano repertoire”, he states. Mustonen’s complete recording of the Beethoven variation cycles won the Edison Award. He has selected several of them for this evening’s recital, including the variations on “God Save the King”, the British national anthem.
