Ludwig van Beethoven
Sonata No. 17 in D Minor op. 31/2 “The Tempest”
Sonata No. 26 in E Flat Major op. 81a “Les Adieux”

As Hungarian-born piano master András Schiff revealed in an interview, he begins every day with an hour of Bach at the piano. “Bach in the morning is like taking a shower for the soul”, he enthuses. Yet his household gods also include Mozart, Schubert, and, last not least, Beethoven. Since 2004, Schiff has been performing the complete cycle of Beethoven sonatas in more than 20 cities. And in 2008 he finished his complete recording thereof, which has been showered with distinctions and awards. Audiences can be glad that the hailed pianist often returns to Bach and Beethoven, the two great “B’s” of music history. The pieces selected for tonight’s recital clearly show how closely the two composers are related.
