There is a depth to Beatrice Rana’s playing that is eavesdropped on life and the crises it can bring.

For the Italian pianist, classical music is an art whose own language you have to engage with in order to understand it. People, says Beatrice Rana, would appreciate music more if they knew the grammar and semantics of this “language” better. And that is the central point for her: “Musical education must be improved so that people, young and old, can enjoy classical music. And I don’t just mean musical education in schools, which enables children to come into contact with classical music, but also musical education in the sense that people should be able to go to concerts. And that they are proud to do so. That they don’t think that what they hear is something dead. Or that it’s just virtuoso artistry without aesthetic categories.” When she takes to the stage with flautist Emanuel Pahud, the audience will understand what she means after just a few notes.

Emmanuel Pahud

French and Swiss flautist Emmanuel Pahud began studying music at the age of six. He graduated in 1990 with the 1er Prix from the Paris Conservatoire, and went on studying with Aurèle Nicolet. He won 1st Prize at the Duino, Kobe and Geneva Competitions, and at age 22 Emmanuel joined the Berliner Philharmoniker as Principal Flute under Claudio Abbado, a position which he still holds today. In addition, he enjoys an extensive international career as soloist and chamber musician.
