Ever since he garnered First Prize at the renowned Clara Haskil Competition in Vevey, Till Fellner has been a welcome guest at a number of international music venues. Widely acknowledged as an insightful, perceptive performer, Fellner places his interpretation entirely at the service of the composer’s intentions. Whether dealing with contemporary music or with Bach and Beethoven, Fellner endeavors to fathom the composer’s language and to let the audience partake in his quasi-spiritual insight into the music. Fellner will focus his 14th appearance at the Festival on works of the three great composers of Vienna Classicism: Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven. What Fellner particularly appreciates about Beethoven is the composer’s utter stylistic variety, along with the tremendous evolution one can trace in his output, particularly in the piano sonatas. Fellner thus closes the evening with the luminous timbres of the Waldstein sonata, complementing his Viennese selection with two finely nuanced narrative gems of repertoire: Debussy’s “Estampes” and one of Liszt’s two “Legends.”
