Ferruccio Busoni
Improvisation on the Bach choral song “How well I feel, O friend of the soul”
Fantasy for an organ roll
Duettino concertante after Mozart
Fantasia contrappuntistica
Choral variations on “Glory to God in the highest”

In 1921, Ferruccio Busoni revisited his bold experiment of completing Bach’s “Art of Fugue,” a project he had started in 1912.

After several unsuccessful attempts that never entirely convinced him, he found the solution for his “Fantasia Contrappuntistica” in a version for two pianos. Not only that, but Busoni was so enthusiastic about the result that he developed a program around the piece. The discovery of his program, conceived in June 1922 and described as “like a sonata,” including arrangements of some works by Mozart, has truly electrified the GrauSchumacher piano duo. In their performance, the two pianists passionately pay homage to the visionary Busoni, who, in his Fantasia, connects the highest art of baroque genius to the present and develops the utopia of a resonance of the future. When the piano duo performs the program in the Salt Storage of the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex, the attention of the listeners is subtly directed to the magical architecture of the music by the permanent installation “The Palace of Projects” by Ilya and Emilia Kabakov. GrauSchumacher transparently reveal structures and give the music a great breath. The deeper one allows oneself to be drawn into this cosmos by the lightness of their technical virtuosity and the magical poetry of the pianists, the more delicate and captivating this opus, filled with the spirit of Mozart and Bach, becomes. In the ideal scenario, time and space lose their boundaries, and one experiences a new freedom existentially longed for by Busoni.
