An extraordinary duo has formed between the Cuban pianist Omar Sosa and the Sardinian trumpeter Paolo Fresu.
For over 15 years, they have been meeting, inviting guests, and releasing albums with titles such as “Alma,” “Eros,” “Food.” For the Piano Festival Ruhr, they come without guests, but they are skilled in percussion and electronics sufficiently to ignite a kaleidoscope of rhythms and sounds even as a duo. Sosa, a follower of the Afro-Cuban Santería cult and a master of relevant ritual-musical practices, and Fresu, a trumpeter with a Miles Davis-inspired yet distinctly unique tone – an encounter of a special kind.

45309 EssenCuban composer and pianist Omar Sosa is one of the most versatile jazz artists on the scene today. He fuses a wide range of jazz, world music, and electronic elements with his native Afro-Cuban roots to create a fresh and original urban sound – all with a Latin jazz heart. Omar Sosa’s musical trajectory has taken him from Camagüey and Havana to touring in Angola, the Congo, Ethiopia, and Nicaragua in the 1980s; to a sojourn in the African-descent communities of Ecuador in the early 1990s; to an extended presence on the San Francisco Bay Area Latin jazz scene; to his current engagement with artists from France, Cuba, Brazil, and several North, West, and East African nations.
One of the world’s major trumpeters, prolific jazz artist Paolo Fresu has recorded around 500 titles since the Eighties. Born in 1961 in Sardinia, Italy, Fresu learned the trumpet at the age of 11 and later studied the instrument at the Cagliari Conservatory. Upon his graduation in 1984, he quickly accumulated awards, with accolades from France’s Académie du Jazz and a Django d’Or. With a sound reminiscent of 1950’s Miles Davis era, Fresu has created a style all his own, mastering with a natural ease any genre, from straight jazz to fusion. Between recordings and shows, Fresu also serves as artistic director for the Berchidda’s Time in Jazz, his hometown’s jazz festival.
