George Benjamin is one of the outstanding composers of his generation. Born in 1960, Benjamin started to play the piano at the age of seven, and began composing almost immediately. In 1976 he entered the Paris Conservatoire to study with Olivier Messiaen (composition) and Yvonne Loriod (piano), after which he studied under Alexander Goehr at King's College Cambridge
Pierre-Laurent Aimard - Biography
Born in Lyon in 1957, Pierre-Laurent Aimard studied at the Paris Conservatoire with Yvonne Loriod and in London with Maria Curcio. Early career landmarks included winning first prize in the 1973 Messiaen Competition and being appointed at the age of 19 by Pierre Boulez to become the Ensemble intercontemporain's first solo pianist. For more than 15 years Aimard collaborated closely with György Ligeti, recording his complete works for piano.

The aim of the education project was to approach Piano Figures from a number of different angles. Four young students studied the work with Pierre-Laurent Aimard and presented the pieces at a lecture recital. Parallel to this pupils and teachers from the Folkwang Music School and the Folkwang University, Essen, took Benjamin’s musical ideas as starting points for their own creative work...
Piano Figures is a collection of ten concentrated miniatures for piano lasting about 15 minutes. Benjamin dedicated the work to his nephews and nieces and most of the pieces are written to fall within a child’s stretch.
