As a child, I was fascinated with Europe – everything from the Greeks and the Romans to classical music to the visual arts. I have been fortunate enough to come to Europe many times as a touring musician and am always impressed with the quality of listening that occurs at my performances. Music education and support for the arts is strong all over the Continent and that makes for an educated audience and excellent playing conditions – including very nice pianos!

For an American jazz musician, going to Europe has always meant a whole-hearted embrace of our art, devoid of politics, racism or pretense, not to mention the demand on the part of the European audiences for complete honesty and skill in our craft. In most ways this hasn’t changed, and it is why I still seek to bring my music to European audiences. Furthermore, it has been a tradition in Europe to embrace the continuum of an art form, its history and the bold innovative moments that change our point of view. I am grateful to be part of this strong cultural fabric that unites people to embrace that innovation, to create, perform, share ideas and engage with each other in meaningful ways. Sie scheinen breit ausgetreten, die Pfade im Jazz. Es scheint, als ob fast alles schon mal dagewesen wäre. Im Piano-Jazz haben Größen wie Keith Jarrett, Bill Evans oder Herbie Hancock die Marschrichtung vorgegeben. Doch Fred Hersch ist es mit seinem hoch virtuosen und dabei glasklaren Spiel gelungen, eigene Fußspuren zu hinterlassen und das Wegenetz immer noch zu erweitern. Und die Tatsache, dass ihm als ersten Pianisten überhaupt die Ehre zuteilwurde, eine komplette Woche im New Yorker Traditionsclub „Village Vanguard“ Solokonzerte geben zu dürfen, spricht wohl für sich.

Wenn er nun mit der WDR Big Band und dem „Composer in Residence“ Vince Mendoza zum ersten Mal seine Musik im Großformat präsentiert und damit beim Klavier-Festival Ruhr debütiert, dürfen wir uns darauf freuen, dass sich Fred Hersch erneut auf den Weg macht, um neue, faszinierende Klanglandschaften zu erschließen.
